How To Pick The Best Produce

Blog Image:
We all know that fruits and vegetables are good for us: low-calorie, high in vitamins and nutrients, and usually wonderfully tasty. And we all know, also, that buying fresh produce is the best way to make sure all those great nutrients make it into our bodies. But how do you choose?

Fresh is best. That should be your mantra when you come to Bliss Shurfine Food Mart. Always look for the freshest produce; and here’s how you can tell:

Vegetables:

  • Asparagus will have straight stalks with closed tips.
  • Bell peppers should be thick, bright, and firm.
  • Broccoli needs to have closed florets and a deep green color.
  • Carrots should be smooth, very firm, and brightly colored.
  • Green beans will be crisp and straight, with long pods.
  • Onions should be dry with smooth skins and small necks.
  • Potatoes always should be firm and smooth.
  • Tomatoes are best when they have a rich overall red color and seem plump.

Fruits:

  • Apricots should have a gold color and be firm to the touch.
  • Cantaloupe shouldn’t have a stem and have a thick texture.
  • Cherries need to have a smooth, shiny surface.
  • Grapes must be firmly attached to their stems.
  • Honeydew should give off a delicate aroma (yes, go ahead, smell it!).
  • Peaches can have a very slight cushion but otherwise should be firm.
  • Oranges feel heavy with a smooth texture.
  • Watermelons’ shape should be symmetrical.

Picking the best produce is a snap when you know what to look for. We always have helpful people working in our produce section; please feel free at any time to consult them on what produce to purchase!
