Planning Your Best Summer Picnic Ever!

It’s hot out there! But hot days are the days we remember, days spent with family and friends, days spent on vacation, days spent just being lazy. And best of all, hot summer days were just made for cool summer picnics. Here’s how to plan one that will make for memories for years to come.

For best results, you want to plan well ahead. This includes:

Planning the menu. Everyone does sandwiches and chips, so forget them and try something new. Pasta salads, potato salads, chicken salad, tortilla wraps, and hearty veggies with dips all hold up well (and you can get them all ready-made here at our deli counter!). Why not try some portable BLT pockets? Or cold chicken drumsticks? Make sure you include dessert, too.

Watching the weather. Obviously reschedule for really bad weather, but you can accommodate cloudy of windy weather; just make sure you dress for the former and use bowls instead of plates for the latter.

Staying hydrated. You’re outside, you’re running around, catching Frisbees or balls, you’re going to need to drink a lot of water.

Packing your picnic. Hot and cold liquids belong in thermoses. Messy foods should go into tightly sealed plastic containers. Dry items, like potato chips, travel well in plastic bags. When you pack your cooler, place large, heavy items in the bottom and smaller, lighter ones on top.

And, finally, checking the following:

  • Sunscreen
  • Lip balm with SPF
  • Insect repellent
  • Napkins (paper or cloth)
  • Cups
  • Plates
  • Forks and knives
  • Extra plastic bags (for collecting and disposing of trash)
  • Beach umbrella if you’d like to keep your food in the shade
  • Blanket or extra-large beach towels
  • Corkscrew or bottle opener
  • Salt and pepper
  • Any condiments the group might need
  • Picnic basket, bag or other carrier

The best part about that list is that you can buy everything that’s one it here at Bliss Shurfine Food Mart! We’re happy to help you with all your picnicking needs.
