Healthy (And Economical!) Food Shopping: 10 Tips

If you’re like most Americans, you’re probably finding it a challenge to make healthy food choices for your family—while keeping to a food budget! But we’ve come up with some tips to make sure you stay within your budget and still eat well.

  1. Take an inventory of the food you already have in your home. How many times have you gone shopping, only to find that you already had that can of corn in the back of your pantry shelf?
  2. Plan your meals for the week, remembering any events you have planned, such as a dinner party.
  3. Make a shopping list with your weekly plans in mind. Then add on any staples that might be running low: milk, butter, salt/pepper, etc.
  4. Oh, and that shopping list? Stick to it!
  5. When you are comparing prices at the grocery store, look at the unit price, not the sale price. This will tell you where you get the best deal.
  6. When you can, buy generic versions of foods.
  7. Only take advantage of the deal if you know you will actually eat the discounted item. It’s not a deal if the food goes to waste!
  8. Shop the store’s perimeter for nutrient-dense foods. Processed and packaged foods tend to be more expensive.
  9. Bring your own bags. Being healthy means keeping the environment healthy, too!
  10. Shop for foods that are in season. When the supply is plentiful, the prices tend to be lower.
