Do You Have a Waffle Iron?

Once upon a time, nearly every household did. And, to a child, it was almost miraculous, the transformation that happened inside the waffle iron: glutinous batter went in, and hey, presto, beautiful golden-brown waffles emerged. It was breakfast magic!

The waffle dates back to the 1300s in Greece, where flat cakes were cooked between two metal pans. At the time, people topped the cakes with cheeses and herbs, rather than pancake syrup!

Of course, today you don’t actually need a waffle iron, not anymore. Our frozen-food section has plenty of ready-made waffles to pop in the toaster; and they’re pretty convenient for modern families on the run.

But maybe they’ve lost a little of that breakfast magic.

Today we’re reclaiming it: yes, you got it: it’s actually National Waffle Iron Day! And you know how to celebrate … If you don't already have a waffle iron, today is a good day to go out and buy one: why not? Or you can see if you can find the one you have stashed somewhere in the back of a cupboard or pantry. Come on over to Bliss Shurfine Food Mart (Shortsville and Manchester NY) and buy some pancake/waffle mix, and let your house fill with those glorious smells, watch that amazing miracle take place.

(And if you don’t have a waffle iron, it’s okay: we won’t tell. Just stop in for some of the frozen waffles anyway. Who needs a reason to eat waffles, after all?)
