"Choose My Plate" for Healthy Eating

The U.S. Department of Agriculture provides programs, information, services, and much more to anyone who wants to know more about food. It’s odd how we often overlook the most obvious resources, but this is one you don’t want to miss!

In particular, take time to visit one of the USDA’s sites, ChooseMyPlate.gov. ChooseMyPlate.gov provides practical information to individuals, health professionals, nutrition educators, and the food industry to help consumers build healthier diets with resources and tools for dietary assessment, nutrition education, and other user-friendly nutrition information.

As Americans are experiencing epidemic rates of overweight and obesity, the online resources and tools can empower people to make healthier food choices for themselves, their families, and their children.

MyPlate illustrates the five food groups that are the building blocks for a healthy diet and uses a familiar image (a place setting for a meal). Before you eat, think about what goes on your plate or in your cup or bowl:

  • Fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Grains (make at least half of them whole grains!)
  • Protein foods
  • Dairy

There are amazing resources on the site: how to eat healthy on a budget, a nutrition education series, recipes/cookbooks/menus, daily tips, food plans, lesson plans for teachers, a wellness toolkit, even a kid’s place… the list goes on and on.

Why not take a moment now and head on over? You’ll learn about how to create and maintain sensible, budget-conscious shopping lists and meals and keep yourself and your family healthy.
