Deli Delights

A Short History

Delicatessen is a term meaning "delicacies" or "fine foods." Delicatessen originally meant only this specially prepared food. In time, the delicatessen store where this food was sold came to be called a delicatessen, and in this sense is often abbreviated to deli. In Europe, "delicatessen" has a different meaning than in the United States as it designates top-quality (and top-price) foodstuffs, stores, and counters (think Harrod’s in London, for example).

What's At The Deli?

What Are GMOs?

GMOs are genetically modified organisms—that is, living organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering. This relatively new science creates unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacteria and viral genes that don’t occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods.

Why Should I Care About Bees?

At some point in school we all learned about ecosystems. We learned that they are complex systems that function smoothly when each part is playing its role. Remove one part, and there will be consequences.

What isn’t generally taught in science classes is that one particular part of our ecosystem, the honeybee, has so pivotal a role that no less a luminary than Albert Einstein is said to have commented on its importance.

Winter Recipe: Crock-Pot Potato Chowder

Baby, it’s cold outside! And what could be better this weekend than smelling the slow simmering of a delicious, filling chowder? Start it in the morning and you’ll be famished by dinner!

You can make a vegetarian version by using cream of celery soup instead of cream of chicken, and omitting the bacon.

What you need:

  • 8 cups diced potatoes (we like red-skinned, but choose your own favorites)
  • 1/3 cup onion, chopped
  • 3 (14 ½-ounce) cans chicken broth
  • 1 (10 ¾-ounce) can condensed cream of chicken soup

Take Your Vitamins!

There are few things as confusing as how, when, and where to get the vitamins your body needs.

In the best of all possible worlds, you wouldn’t need to take any vitamin supplements: you’d be getting all your vitamins from the foods you eat. Unfortunately, many of us don’t eat the kind of balanced diet that ensures we’re getting what we need.

Let's Talk Gluten-Free

A lot of people have made the decision to go gluten-free, and if you’re not one of them, you may be wondering what it’s all about. The gluten-free diet seems to have become the latest trend: it’s estimated that around 1.6 million people in the US follow it without having been diagnosed with celiac disease (a severe gluten intolerance).

Gluten is a protein composite found in wheat and related grains, including barley and rye. It gives dough elasticity, which helps it rise and keep its shape, and often gives the final product a chewy texture.

Skip the Delivery and Have Family Fun Making Pizza Instead!

The weekend is a great time to gather the family in the kitchen and create something together. And what could be more fun—and welcome!—than pizza night, with a pizza that everyone contributes to?

You can start with a refrigerated pizza dough—your kids will have fun rolling it out and you don’t have to worry about getting the crust just right. Or, alternately, use a Bisquick or Jiffy baking mix to create your own.
